Do it to Live

I was watching something that had been sitting on my Netflix queue called “Fully Alive” by comedian Ken Davis. I had never heard of this gentleman before tonight, but he had me in giggles with his sweet anecdotes and jokes. The thing that captured my attention the most, however, was his storytelling ability. He was really passionate about the “moral of the story” as he entertained his audience.

One tale he mentioned was about preparing for a triathlon at 64 years young. There was a point where Ken was riding uphill on his bicycle when a gentleman much older than he flew by him, also on bike. The older man slowed back down to speak with Ken as they biked uphill, and he shared his story of having a stroke and eventually regaining his speech and mobility. The older man spoke of his biking: “I do it to live.”

Ken made the point that the man could have said, “I do it to stay alive,” but he didn’t. He said, “I do it to live.”

This made me consider the vast amount of opportunities that face us each day, and how many of them do we embrace as a part of a fulfilling life? What do we do to fully live? If waking up 15 minutes earlier each day could mean accomplishing a long desired goal, would we do it?

We all have a higher purpose, something that we would pour our hearts into if given the opportunity. Make the choice today to make that opportunity for yourself.

What are you doing right now… to live?
